Pokemon Champions Arrives on April 8, 2026, and the second it lands, it will create a massive rift among fans: Two of its new abilities are already generating controversy, and it seems that they will destroy the competitive Meta for good.

Mega Meganium & Mega Feraligatr Will Destroy The Meta

Charizard and Samurot vs Dodonzo and Aegislash in Pokemon Champions

The Pokemon VGC and the competitive scene of the mainline games will change forever as The Pokemon Company will release Pokemon Champions, which will be the single platform where official tournaments are going to be played.

No matter how strong the wind (and waves) blows, there’s no more changing games every few years to participate in competitive play, and that’s a good thing (sort of) for most of the fans of Pokemon.

Now, on the other hand, with the release of Pokemon Champions, the latest Mega Evolutions like Mega Malamar, Mega Froslass, Mega Meganium, Mega Emboar, and Mega Feraligatr are receiving their own abilities, which were disabled in Pokemon Legends Z-A.

The problem is: Mega Feraligatr and Mega Meganium will have two new abilities, and fans are not so sure about how these will alter the competitive meta.

Mega Feraligatr is receiving Dragonize, an ability that turns all Normal-type moves into Dragon-type moves and adds +20% increased damage to them. Yes, Hyper Beam, Slash, and Strength as well. Just thinking about the possibilities to turn tons of cool Physical and Special attacks into boosted Dragon-type moves is nuts.

Trainers competing in Pokemon Champions

Needless to say, Mega Rayquaza receiving the full force of a Dragonized Hyper Beam (180 + Stab + Super Effective = Bye bye Ray!) will be a common sight at tournaments. If, and only if, anybody is crazy enough to make a Sp. Atk build for Mega Feraligatr, which is, theoretically, quite viable.

On the other hand, Mega Meganium will acquire Mega Sol, which basically makes all its abilities act under the Harsh Sunlight condition, meaning Solar Beam and Solar Blade activate instantly, and Synthesis will heal this Pokemon for 2/3 of its HP. Super broken.

Now, I’ve seen my fair share of crazy Trainers spamming Solar Blade with Mega Meganium in Ranked battles, and I must agree on something: It can absolutely wreck you if you are not careful. So, imagine Meganium evolving and saying: ‘the Power of the Sun, in the Palm of my paws,’ because that’s what’s gonna happen from now on.

And don’t let me get started with Mega Froslass having Snow Cloak, because that will be absolute madness. Needless to say, the world of Pokemon battles is about to change for good (or worse), but hey! That’s the fun part of Pokemon, right? Right?
