The massive success of Yellowstone and its prequels has turned writer, producer, director, and actor Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western universe into one of American television’s most expansive franchises. With the prequels already exploring the Dutton family legacy and Marshals covering Kayce’s story at home, Dutton Ranch is next in line to propel the Dutton name into its next chapter.
The teaser trailer, which dropped March 2026, shows that focus is expected to shift from the high-stakes political drama of Yellowstone to a more grounded (but no less action-packed) character-driven look at life on the new ranch. While the original series blended corporate battles with internal family power struggles, this spin-off is rumoured to delve deeper into the day-to-day lives of Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser), and what they’ll do themselves to keep the life they’ve built away from Montana.
What We Know About The Story

Following on from Yellowstone, the story of Dutton Ranch will focus on Beth Dutton, her husband Rip Wheeler, and their (unofficially) adopted son, Carter (Finn Little), as they make a home for themselves in Texas. However, from the teaser trailer, we can see that this life won’t just be about branding cattle and mucking stalls. From the very beginning, we see Rip find a dead body and Beth striding powerfully with pistol in hand towards who or what we don’t know just yet.
Westworld actor Ed Harris joins the show as a compassionate veterinarian, and it’s heavily implied that acting royalty, Annette Bening, will be the thorn in the Dutton-Wheelers’ side throughout the 9-episode first season.

Guns are fired, punches are thrown, and explosions ensue as Beth bitingly explains to Bening her feelings on family legacies, but what’s said as a statement feels more like a threat. While we don’t know the circumstances of their meeting, we do know that Bening will play the powerful and cunning head of a major rival ranch in Texas.
The story of Dutton Ranch doesn’t seem to be “raising the stakes” so to speak, but shifting focus and digging deeper into the world of two of the original’s favourite remaining characters. The series will premiere on May 15, 2026, on Paramount+ with Chad Feehan acting as the series’ showrunner.
