Continuing with the Hernand in Chaos questline in the second chapter of Crimson Desert, you’re met with a smattering of subquests, one of which is “The Man Trapped in the Mire”. In it, you investigate a case involving stolen goods and goats with their horns cut off on behalf of a rather enraged rancher who wants answers.

As expected, you will need to track down the stolen items, but the catch is that you are not bringing everything back. Instead, you are looking for a small, specific item, which can feel like finding a needle in a haystack if you mess things up, literally. Along the way, the Man Trapped in the Mire quest also teaches you how to read and replay memories using the Visione you picked up earlier in Chapter Two.

How To Start The Man Trapped In The Mire Quest

The Man Trapped in the Mire Quest can be received by reading all four posters (it’s the Horn Thief poster) on the notice board for the Where Mystery Gather quest. Since it’s part of Crimson Desert’s story progression, you can’t miss it.

Once you’ve acquired the quest, track it down from your Journal, and head to the marked location on the mini map. There, you’ll meet Ibano, the rancher in question, and after a short cutscene, he explains the situation in full.

The bandits were apparently hired to steal stones from his ranch, which Ibano could not care less about. They did not stop there, however, and ransacked the place and went as far as cutting the horns off his goats, which is what actually gets under his skin.

Ibano asks you to track down the thieves and recover the stolen goods.

How To Complete The Man Trapped In The Mire Quest

After speaking with the rancher, follow the quest marker for “Read the memory on the mysterious horn thief” objective to where the thieves are.

Once you arrive at the location with the stolen goods, a short cutscene plays out, and you’ll need to dispatch the thieves.

Kliff facing off three bandits in Crimson Desert.

There are three of them, which should not be much trouble, but try to keep the fight away from the crates as much as you can.

Note: You do not want to damage the goods during the confrontation, because that can make finding a particular item for the quest much harder than it needs to be.

Once they are dealt with, bring out your lantern near the goods using LB or L1 on controller or Ctrl on keyboard, to read the Hornless Goat memory.

Quick Tip: You’ll know there’s a memory you can play when Kliff’s lantern emenates a blue glow.

Then you need to play the memory. While you had to manually use the Visione to play it, after the recent Crimson Desert patch, the memory now plays automatically after reading it.

After viewing the memory, the objective updates to “find the stolen item.”

You are not looking for the crates themselves, but a small item called the Mysterious Elixir near one of them, and that’s what we meant by taking the fight far from the goods earlier.

There’s also a Palmer Pill inside one of the crates, so make sure to grab it while you are there. It is not tied to the objective, but it can come in handy during tougher encounters, and there is no reason to leave it behind.

The Man Trapped In The Mire Quest Rewards

With the quest item in hand, return to Ibano, although he will not be standing where you first met him. Follow the updated quest marker to his new location, and you will find him waiting there.

Clearly, he’s got a short fuse and the Mysterious Elixir is not even his, but that does not stop him from taking it and calling it a day. In return, you receive the promised rewards as per usual, including five Cloth Pieces, 130 coins, and 100 Contribution Points.
