The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day gave plenty of new details, but some things might still be a bit confusing. While some of the villains are clear to see, others might be hidden in plain sight.

Spider-Man has a broad rogues’ gallery of enemies to fight, so Marvel had plenty of options to choose from. However, it looks like they’re aiming for some classic comic-book covers. Here are the different villains who are going to be featured in some capacity in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The Scorpion

The Scorpion, or Mac Gargan, is a classic Spider-Man villain, famously a common member of the Sinister Six. He’s one that we haven’t seen too much of in any of the mainstream Spider-Man films, except when he was shown working alongside the Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, we never get to see him in the suit; we only hear his name and see a Scorpion tattoo on his neck. Very MCU way to tease a villain, truly.

In the comics, Scorpion is a formidable foe of Spidey’s. He wears an armored green suit with a massive Scorpion’s tail on the back, which is equipped with an extremely sharp point and a potent toxin. He uses this to cause hallucinations or to disorient his foes before he strikes. In the comics, he was part of an experiment that caused him to go insane, but also to gain superhuman abilities that make him a close match for the wall-crawler.

Boomerang

Boomerang’s real name is Fred Meyers, and he is another character who hasn’t been seen in the MCU or any of the big three Spider-Man franchises. He is an Australian who grew up in the US and became a professional baseball pitcher, only to be banned for illegal gambling. Afterwards, he joined the Secret Empire and became an assassin based on his incredible throwing ability.

While not one of the most powerful of Spider-Man’s villains, he certainly still poses a threat. His suit comes equipped with boot jets that allow him to fly, and he has a plethora of boomerangs, including Razorangs, Electrorangs, and exploding Shatterangs. He seems like one of those villains who won’t feature too much screentime in the overall plot of Brand New Day, but is used to show off how many villains Spidey has to deal with.

Tarantula

Anton Rodriguez is yet another character we have not seen on the big screen before. He starts off in South America fighting against a fascist regime until he is recruited by that same government because of his ruthless nature. After that, the government disavowed him for political reasons, and he moved to New York to become Spider-Man’s problem.

His story in the comics is certainly interesting, given that he gets mutated into a giant spider after an experiment gone wrong, so Brand New Day might just focus on him being a standard villain for the time being. He has no superhuman abilities (before the experiment, anyway), but is a skilled fighter who has retractable blades in his gloves and boots. These blades, like Scorpion’s tail, contain a dangerous toxin.

Mosaic

Mosaic and Spider-Man fighting for control of spidey's body

This one is a bit more theoretical, but the evidence backs it up nicely. In the trailer, someone speaks to Spider-Man about a threat they can’t control or see, and it shows people being possessed in rapid succession. If this is actually what’s happening here, then Brand New Day might be planning to bring Mosaic to the big screen.

Mosaic’s real name was Morris Sackett, and he was a basketball player who was exposed to the Terrigen Mist. This essentially turned him into a form of energy, able to levitate, pass through solid objects, and possess people. Doing so allows him to retain some of the person’s skills, but prevents him from possessing the same person twice. He can’t be seen unless the person has already been possessed by him, making him potentially an incredibly challenging foe for Spider-Man if he chooses to oppose him.

Unknown

The main unknown now is who is sitting in that chair. There has been some speculation that it could be Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey, but it could also be some other powerful character that Spidey has to deal with. Maybe this is Mosaic? It would certainly be different from the comics, but the MCU has been known to change origin stories. There’s just no way to know until the movie hits the big screen and we get to see for ourselves.

Some of these villains are definitely going to be in Brand New Day based on the trailer, while Mosaic is the main unknown. Not only is it unclear whether his character will even be in the movie, but if he is, it’s unclear whether he’ll be used as a villain. It certainly seems like he’s being painted in that light, but maybe he’s just being framed that way so the DODC can act without oversight.

Red Ninjas

We don’t have any reliable information to confirm which organization these ninjas belong to, so any claims would be speculation. However, there are potential options on the table. The leading theory is that it’s a return of the Hand from Daredevil, as they’re already a group of ninjas with ties to New York City.

There’s also the possibility of the organization being the Secret Empire. It’s lesser known in our current form of the Marvel universe, but there could be fascinating ties that would open the door to plenty of legacy characters making appearances. By the looks of the trailer, it seems like Band New Day wants to really harken back to some of the classic comics, so it’s not entirely off the table that the writers would dig just a little bit deeper.
