As the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day drops, it’s already sparking intense discussion among fans online. Packed with comic book callbacks, emotional moments, and intriguing hints at the future of Peter Parker, the trailer teases a new direction for the franchise.

Opening on Peter as he travels through New York alone (leading on from his erasure from the world in Spider-Man: No Way Home), the weight of the letter to his friends is still heavy on his mind. The film will have clear links to Daredevil: Born Again by teasing connections with Kingpin’s campaign advisor, The Punisher, and The Hand, with the trailer also showing a number of different enemies. Showing us glimpses of Scorpion, Boomerang, Tarantula, and more.

It’s unknown whether these villains will be front and center for the whole movie or if Marvel is simply copying their ideas from The Fantastic Four: First Steps and just giving us a rundown of the current dangers facing the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.

What is clear from the trailer, however, is that there will be one overriding villain who appears to be using mind control to enact their wrongdoing. Fans have long speculated that this will be Sadie Sink, with the character being that of X-Men legend Jean Grey/Phoenix.

First time on screen together, Jon Bernthal will appear as The Punisher, and while the trailer shows Spider-Man putting a stop to whatever Frank has planned, it’s unclear whether a team-up will occur. Bruce Banner also makes his comeback in the trailer, sadly forgetting Peter Parker, like the rest of the world, but seemingly helping his transition into something…else.

As Keith David narrates during the trailer, spiders have several life cycles. Leading fans to speculate that Spider-Man: Brand New Day could be following the ‘Man-Spider’ storyline from the original Marvel Comics. Giving us a brand new, mutated Peter Parker as a kind of “rebirth” for the character.

Running alongside the danger and peril of Spider-Man’s life is the loneliness and longing of Peter’s as he watches friends MJ and Ned from a distance before approaching them at a housewarming. It’s clear from this first trailer that the love story lost in Spider-Man: No Way Home is not forgotten and will be a driving force for Peter in this new movie.

The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day feels like a much more stripped-down version of the superhero from the previous two iterations in the franchise. While the stakes are always high for Peter Parker, the emotional toll on the character feels likely to be much bigger than before.
