The Best Picture Oscar is one of the most, if not the most, coveted awards in entertainment. It is also the biggest award of Oscars night, and studios shell out good money for Oscars campaigns to secure the win for their movies. Every year, the most critically acclaimed movies are up for nominations, but at the end of the day, while it’s an honor just to be nominated, only one movie can claim the prize.

This year, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another took home the grand prize. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Benicio Del Toro, Chase Infiniti, Regina Hall, and Sean Penn. It follows a washed-up ex-revolutionary living off the grid with his daughter. Their lives are upended when an enemy from the past comes demanding blood.

The Competition for Best Picture Was Fierce at the 2026 Oscars

To take home the Best Picture trophy, One Battle After Another went up against Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners, and Train Dreams. As expected, the category was packed with bold filmmaking and ambitious storytelling, delivering a lineup stacked with heavy hitters, making the win far from guaranteed.

However, Paul Thomas Anderson‘s directorial instinct, blending dark comedy with an action-thriller backbone, emerged as the winning combination. The movie also demanded a career-best effort from its cast, delivering powerhouse performances from its ensemble. Its all-star cast, Anderson’s signature direction, and a story that remains as gripping as it was unpredictable, came together to deliver a movie worthy of its Best Picture win. Alongside Best Picture, One Battle After Another also won Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Casting, and Best Film Editing. Talk about a dominating run.

One Battle After Another Impressed Both Audiences and Critics

Anderson’s Oscar-winning picture currently has a 94% critics’ score and an 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s not hard to see why the movie landed with such acclaim; it is widely considered one of Anderson’s best works. Considering Anderson directed movies like Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, and The Master, calling One Battle After Another one of his best works is undeniably high praise and paints a clear picture of its quality and impact.

Most recent winners of the Best Picture Oscar include Nomadland, CODA, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Oppenheimer, and Anora. Needless to say, One Battle After Another is certainly in good company.
