Sony finally released the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and there’s a lot to unpack. From new characters to old ones repurposed, there seem to be loads of faces to greet our friendly neighborhood web-slinger.

While we don’t know exactly who some of the characters are just yet, the trailer shows just enough to pique interest. There’s going to be plenty of room for speculation in the coming months until Spider-Man Brand New Day drops on July 31.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Character List

While we’ve seen many of the faces shown in the new trailer, they’re in places or contexts that aren’t quite what we’re used to seeing them in. That’s why we’re going to give a little rundown of who’s who, where and why.

Here’s a list of every character we know from the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer.

  • Peter Parker/Spider-Man – Peter has certainly seen better days than what we’re seeing of him in the Brand New Day trailer. From his conversation with Bruce Banner, it sounds like his DNA is mutating in some way, severely affecting him and causing him to develop new abilities, like slinging natural webs from his wrists rather than his web shooters.
  • Ned Leeds – Peter Parker’s best friend, or, ex-best friend, now that nobody on Earth remembers who Peter Parker actually is. Ned’s still got a close relationship with MJ, though, so it’ll be interesting to see how this dynamic all plays out.
  • MJ – Peter Parker’s main love interest, who also doesn’t remember the fact that she was dating him throughout the last movie. She’ll likely sus Peter out sooner rather than later, but it doesn’t look like she’s gonna remember their past anytime soon.
  • Frank Castle/The Punisher – Frank is going to be an interesting one to watch. The gritty, angry antihero is used to dealing with guys in red tights, but Daredevil is going to look like a criminal compared to Peter’s “friendly” brand of saving the day. Frank’s going to be significantly hindered by the web-slinger, which, frankly, is probably for the best.
  • Bruce Banner/The Hulk – Last we saw of Bruce, he was in a perpetual state of “Hulk,” so it’s interesting to see him teaching a college class as his much smaller alter ego. We see him wearing a device on his hand and wrist that’s likely responsible for this change, and he’s likely going to serve as the sort of “Curt Connors” role, helping Peter with complicated science questions without knowing why he’s asking them.

  • Mac Gargan/The Scorpion – The last time we see the Scorpion, he was locked up with The Vulture at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming. He’s clearly built up some resentment for the wall-crawler, and now he’s gotten his hands on his titular suit, complete with a massive metal tail. We’ll have to wait and see if that tail is as toxic as it is in the comics.
  • Fred Meyers/Boomerang – We actually haven’t seen anything about Fred Meyers in the MCU so far, so it’ll be interesting to see if they follow a similar path as the comics or go more “Wonder Man” in their approach to his origins. In the comics, though, Boomerang was a pro-baseball player who became an assassin, and he’s worked for a number of organizations that’ve crossed paths with Spidey. Notably, the Sinister Six, of which Scorpion was also a member, but also the Secret Empire (which could explain the people dressed in red robes) and the Masters of Evil (of which Wonder Man was once a member).
  • The trailer shows us a slow-motion shot of someone with blades attached to their feet trying to attack Spider-Man on a boat, but it’s also not explicitly stated who this is. However, judging by the outfit and the foot blades, it looks like this will be Tarantula. It’s not clear how his character may play into the overall plot, but the theme of “villains trying to stab Spider-Man” seems pretty prevalent here.
  • Unknowns – Some characters from the trailer still have unclear identities.
    • We’re shown someone strapped to a chair in what appears to be an exceptionally high-security environment, but there’s nothing around them that indicates who they may be. However, we then see someone speaking to Spider-Man about a threat they can’t control or see, after seeing a shot of what appears to be individuals being possessed one after the other. This could imply the appearance of Mosaic, a Marvel character who can assume control of others’ bodies.
    • This trailer also shows a moment in which Spidey appears to be held prisoner (in The Raft?) by a group of red ninjas. While there’s nothing saying exactly who they are, it’s not impossible that this could be a return of The Hand. They haven’t appeared in the MCU, with the movies choosing to source their ninjas from the Ten Rings. However, New York did serve as a bit of a stomping ground for The Hand in Daredevil, Iron Fist and The Defenders, so it’s not impossible for them to make some sort of comeback.
    • While we don’t see him on-screen, we do hear the unmistakable voice of the one and only Keith David. It’s not clear who he’s going to play, but judging from the trailer, he’s gonna be laying down some spider-based exposition.

That’s all we know for now about the characters in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Whether these predictions are right remains to be seen, but there are many interesting directions the film could take if it chooses to. While we didn’t see Jean Grey, that doesn’t mean we won’t find out a bit more later.
