It wont be long into your time in Pokemon Pokopia when you notice a strange roar. Looking around, you’ll likely see that Ho-oh, the legendary bird of Gen 2, is flying overhead.
As good of an omen this is, this scene is more than just an homage to the anime. Following that bird will result in a rare and valuable item.
What Does Ho-oh Do?

Ho-oh will appear randomly (about once an hour, by our estimate). When it does, it will let out a loud roar, fly off in a direction, and disappear.
In the place where it disappears, it will leave behind a tall smokestack. That’s because at that smoke is a Rainbow Feather, a unique item to Ho-oh.
How To Collect Rainbow Feathers

Chase down the location, following the pillar of smoke.
You may need to use Rock Smash (which is aquired by Hitmonlee) to break away a path.
Once there, the Feather will be too hot to handle. Cool it off by using the Water Gun move on it. It will then be safe to pick up.
What To Do With Rainbow Feathers

When you first see Ho-oh and collect a Rainbow Feather, you can’t do anything with them. Later on, you’ll encounter a particular pokemon (A Gimmighoul) that will trade you rare items in exchange for Rainbow Feathers.
So if you’re just starting out, hold on to them. Maybe store them in a storage container until you meet Gimmighoul. Following the natural progress of the story will eventually get you there.
