Housemarque cemented themselves as a key studio in the Playstation family with the release of Returnal, but they’re reaching for new heights with Saros.
Here is what the new State of Play trailer showed us about the world and systems of their upcoming title.
A Balanced System
Although it is a roguelite, Saros features permanent progression with perks. Players have a hub to explore, characters to meet, and a story to explore between runs.
Additionally, Housemarque is taking a new approach to difficulty by allowing players to tinker with bonuses and challenges, described as Trials.
You can choose what are the upsides and downsides that will affect your run. And to reduce the frustration that comes with frequent deaths, it seems like Saros is minimizing friction outside of the difficult runs.
Players can immediately teleport back to a level, called biome, to try their luck again in Carcosa.
Arjun Devaraj, the protagonist who carries the likeness and voice of the fantastic Rahul Kohli, moves extremely fast and can grapple incredible distances.
But, as Housemarque keep reminding us, Saros is a difficult game. Death is inevitable, it is part of the journey that Arjun is taking through the planet of Carcosa. The aforementioned systems are just meant to get you back into the action faster than you would in Returnal.
They’ve also finally revealed what the mysterious Eclipse that has been shown in all trailers is, and it is an impressive system that completely changes the way you and Arjun tackle Carcosa.
Environments, enemies, sounds, and even your own weapons and gadgets are influenced by the Eclipse, in both negatives and positive ways.
Saros seems to be the evolution of Returnal in every way, a spiritual sequel to the game that put Housemarque on the map. We can’t wait to get our hands on it.
The game is coming to PS5 and PS5 Pro on April 30, 2026. A PC port is a given, but we likely won’t see it before mid 2027.
