Santa Monica Studios announced some big news for God of War fans during the February 12 State of Play presentation. Not only will there be a remake of the original God of War trilogy, but there is also a new prequel game available to play right now on PlayStation 5.

What Do We Know About the God of War Trilogy Remake?

God of War 3 icon for the trilogy remake

First, they showed a teaser trailer for a remake of the first three God of War games, but didn’t offer much more information beyond that. The teaser showed the Greek letter Omega (the iconic symbol of the games) split into three, before confirming that it will be a remake of all three original games.

However, we did get to hear about the game from the original Kratos himself, TC Carson. Carson will be playing the God of War in the remake of the initial three games, but the trilogy is certainly in the early stages. He said that the games are “now in development,” but that the next time we hear from them, it’ll be “something big.”

It’s not yet clear how much of a departure from the original games the remake will be, but since it’s labeled a remake rather than a remaster, it will likely be notably different from the originals. Whether that means new and improved controls or entirely new story beats, it’s too soon to tell.

God of War Sons of Sparta Available Now on PS5

While no release window was given for the remake, fans of the God of War franchise were treated to something a bit more current. Santa Monica Studios released God of War Sons of Sparta, a sidescrolling adventure game that takes place before the events of the first God of War game.

The game looks to explore some of Kratos’ experiences before he was ever even a god, during his time as a Spartan. Players will get to take control of Kratos as a measly human, although from the gameplay, he’ll still be taking on some formidable foes. The game’s length hasn’t been revealed yet, but the release date has.

The trailer did a little fakeout, first showing the release date as “2026,” then wiping it away to reveal it is available to play today, February 12. The game is available only on the PlayStation Store, priced at $29.99 for the standard edition and $39.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition.
