Remedy have finally revealed what Control Resonant actually looks like in gameplay terms, and even those completely familiar with the original might have a hard time recognizing anything shown.
Mikael Kasurinen, the Creative Director for the sequel, talked us through a couple minutes of gameplay. Here’s what was shown.
Control May Cry?
Control Resonant sees players control Dylan Faden, likely a relative of the original’s Jesse Faden. The trailer follows a mission sometime during the game, and shows a completely different look to the franchise.
Resonant takes place in an Inception-ified version of Manhattan with quick changes of perspective making the entire city look upside down or sideways up.
Unlike the more grounded Jesse, Dylan seems like a character taken out of Infamous or Prototype. He moves quickly and covers large distances in a blink.
His weapons materialize out of thin air and he is fighting much bigger enemies in a relatively normal looking mission than what was expected in Control.
There seems to be a much lesser focus on horror and a pivot to action and a much more ambitious scope.
If you were expecting a safe sequel you might be disappointed by what seems like a huge departure, but one could argue that Control squeezed the entire lemon, so why not change the fruit?
Control Resonant is releasing on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series consoles, and PC (the game already has a Steam page) sometime this year, but this Playstation State of Play still hasn’t given us any more information regarding a specific date or even a quarter.
We’ll update this piece when more details come out regarding the highly anticipated sequel to Remedy’s 2019 masterpiece.
