The newest installment of HBO’s Game of Thrones franchise, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s beloved Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas.
Set roughly 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the show shifts focus away from massive wars and political chaos and instead tells a more grounded, often lighter, story. However, there is one character who has viewers intrigued – Egg! If you’re wondering who Egg is in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, this guide has you covered.
Who is Egg in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? Explained

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a humble hedge knight with a strong moral compass and his unlikely squire, Egg. While Ser Duncan is an open book (viewers being treated to flashbacks to his own hard life as a squire), Egg is a different story. With his well-spoken politeness and vast knowledge of the world, his mannerisms don’t align with the stories he tells. One of the problems of poverty and homelessness.
There’s a very good reason that Egg seems of a higher stature than one would expect from a lowly squire, and this is because he is, in fact, Aegon V Targaryen, future King of Westeros and the fifteenth Targaryen to sit upon the Iron Throne.
Who is Aegon V Targaryen?

Egg (Aegon V) is the son of (currently) Prince Maekar I. He is seen looking frustrated and extremely stern toward Ser Duncan, while his brother is kind and courteous. When the show begins, he’s looking for two of his missing children, one of whom is Egg.
Aegon V Targaryen, also known as Aegon the Unlikey and Aegon the Fortunate, isn’t anywhere near next in line for the Iron Throne. He is the youngest of Prince Maekar I’s sons, and therefore, a lot has to happen for him to surpass his brothers.
If the show follows the Dunk and Egg novellas closely, a lot will happen to young Egg before he becomes King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men.
Who is Egg to Daenerys Targaryen?

During Game of Thrones, we learn that the Mother of Dragons wasn’t actually the last Targaryen in Westeros. During his time with the Night’s Watch, Jon Snow came into contact with the elderly Maester Aemon, who revealed himself to be of Targaryen blood.
Once a Prince of House Targaryen, Aemon is Egg’s older brother and is the one who gives him the funny nickname. Daenerys was the youngest daughter of Aerys II Targaryen (The Mad King), whose grandfather was Egg himself.
Therefore, Danenerys Targaryen, who is arguably one of the most famous of her family in recent Westeros history, is a great-granddaughter of the squire Egg, and it’s his lineage that brings Dragons back into the world. And, without giving too much away, great-grandfather and great-granddaughter have more in common than one would originally think.
