Whips are a good middle-ground between melee and ranged combat in Terraria, giving you a bit of distance when swinging them. With the new 1.4.5 update, there are a bunch of new whips available to craft for yourself and your friends.

While some of these whips are easy to craft in the early game, others are only accessible in the late game and hardcore mode. If you’re interested in finding out how to get every new whip from the 1.4.5 update in Terraria, you’ve come to the right place.

Every new whip in the Terraria 1.4.5 update

In total, there are nine new whips added to Terraria with the 1.4.5 update. Here’s how you can get every new whip and how much damage they deal to enemies:

Cobwhip

  • Crafting station: Loom
  • Materials: x30 Cobweb, x10 Any Wood

The Cobwhip is probably the easiest to make, as it’s available in pre-Hardmode and can be crafted using a Loom. It deals 9 summon damage, 3 tag damage, and upon hitting, a small spider appears. This spider sticks around for three seconds, dealing 2 damage on contact.

Slime Whip

  • Crafting station: Solidifer
  • Materials: x50 Gel

The Slime Whip is also easy to come by. It’s a pre-Hardmode whip that deals 12 summon damage and 3 tag damage. It also inflicts the Slime debuff (just a visual effect) on targets it hits for three seconds, as well as the On Fire! debuff (prevents health regen and deals -4 health damage per second) for three to five seconds.

Soulscourge

  • Crafting station: Iron or Lead Anvil
  • Materials: x12 Demonite Bar

Next up is the Soulscourge whip, a pre-Hardmode weapon that inflicts 17 summon damage and 5 tag damage. All you need is an Iron or Lead Anvil to create it, but the Demonite Ore required to make the Demonite Bars isn’t as simple. You can get this ore from the Eater of Worlds and Eye of Cthulhu bosses.

Vasculash

  • Crafting station: Iron or Lead Anvil
  • Materials: x12 Crimtane Bar

Vasculah is much like Soulscourge, but instead of using Demonite, it requires Crimtane to make. This weapon hits a bit harder with 19 summon damage and 5 tag damage. You can get Crimtane Ore from the Brain of Cthulhu and Eye of Cthulhu bosses after defeating them. It can also be mined, but it’s found rarely underground.

Starcrash

  • Crafting station: Iron or Lead Anvil
  • Materials: x20 Meteorite Bar, x10 Chain, x10 Fallen Star

Starcrash is the next new pre-Hardmode whip that deals 18 summon damage and 2 tag damage. Its special ability marks enemies with primed energy, meaning a meteor will fall and crash on the enemy, dealing 1.33x the damage from the enemy’s attack. You can create Meteorite Bars from Meteorite, an ore that can be mined from Meteorite crash sites.

Vulgar Display of Flower

  • Boss drop: Plantera

The Vulgar Display of Flower is one of the few Hardcore whips introduced in the 1.4.5 update. It deals 75 summon damage and 9 tag damage.

You cannot craft this whip, as it has a 1/8 chance to drop from the Hardmode boss Plantera. Otherwise, upon hitting enemies with this whip, three violent petals appear and hone in on enemies, dealing 40 damage.

Electric Eel

  • Boss drop: Duke Fishron

Another new Hardcore whip that you cannot craft is Electric Eel. It inflicts a whopping 150 summon damage as well as 12 dage damage. Electric Eel grants minions and sentries a 5% chance to deal critical hits on tagged enemies.

Also, the Electric Eel marks enemies with electric energy. Marked enemies will then occasionally release lightning that bounces between other nearby marked enemies, dealing 50 damage per second.

You can get the Electric Eel whip from the Duke Fishron boss, as it has a 1/6 chance of dropping from it.

Constellation

  • Crafting station: Ancient Manipulator
  • Materials: x18 Stardust Fragment

Constellation is a Hardmode, post-Lunatic Cultist whip dealing 130 summon damage and 15 tag damage. Your minions and sentries have a 15% chance to critical hit tagged enemies when you’re using this whip. Upon hitting an enemy, it releases six non-piercing Shooting Stars that hone in on enemies. They deal 33% of the whip’s damage, alongside its knockback.

To craft Constellation, get an Ancient Manipulator, which is always dropped by the Lunatic Cultist. You can then get Stardust Fragments from the Stardust Pillar boss during Lunar Events.

Possession

  • Boss drop: Moon Lord

The last new whip from the 1.4.5 update is Possession, a Hardmode weapon that deals 110 summon damage and 25 tag damage. It has a 1/5 chance of dropping from the Moon Lord boss.

Possession gives your minions and sentries a 10% chance of dealing critical hits, while also marking enemies with prophetic energy. When a minion or sentry damages these marked enemies, a beam of energy fires at the enemy and deals 20 damage.
