Even amongst the eclectic cast of Hell’s Paradise, there are a few figures who stand out of the crowd.
One such fella is Gantetsusai Tamiya. At over 7 feet tall, he towers over regular men, and if his height doesn’t catch your attention, his boisterous personality surely will.
He’s big, he’s loud, and you’d best believe he’s proud. But what’s he all about? It’s time for us to dish the deets on the big boy himself, and explain who Gantetsusai Tamiya is.
Who is Gantetsusai from Hell’s Paradise?

Gantetsusai is one of the convicts at the heart of Hell’s Paradise’s narrative, sentenced to death for his misdeeds and left with only one option to keep his head on his shoulders. If he braves the accursed island of Shinsekyo and obtains the elixir of life, he will receive a pardon from the shogun.
Prior to ending up incarcerated, Gantetsusai was a legendary swordsman whose reputation preceded him. Born Tetsunosuke, his skill with the blade proved such that mere humans no longer proved a challenge, and he sought out monsters to slay instead. Unfortunately, it was this very quest for thrills that placed him in his current predicament.
What Was Gantetsusai’s Crime?

Whereas the other convicts have a great number of skeletons in their closet, Gantetsusai’s crime is really more a misdemeanor.
Without literal monsters available, Gantetsusai became known for cutting down seemingly impervious structures — the first of which being the keel of a ship, an impressive act that earned him the moniker of the Blade Dragon.
Sometime later, a rather pompous daimyo cast doubt on Gantetsusai’s ability to slay dragons. As a prideful man, Tamiya wasn’t about to let that slight fly, so he carved the daimyo’s front gate clean in half. That was enough to put him on death row, which is equal parts harsh and hilarious.
But now, he’s finally about to come face to face with the monsters he had been hunting all along on Shinsekyo. If you’re keen to know how close he comes to making it through alive, be sure to check out our list of all the survivors of Hell’s Paradise!
