The BAFTA nominations have finally been released, making this the last batch of nominees to be announced during this awards season. While there are some clear fan favourites that definitely made the cut, there are a few surprises that unfortunately fell short.

Here are some of the most shocking snubs and surprises from the list of nominees at this year’s BAFTAs.

SNUB: Wicked: For Good

It looks like the award season campaign for Wicked: For Good is well and truly over. After the shock of last week’s Oscar nominations (seeing the movie receive zero noms), it seems as though the sentiment is pretty much the same at the BAFTAs. Earning only two nominations of the 26 awards – Costume Design and Make Up & Hair.

SURPRISE: I Swear

The Scottish indie film was one of the biggest movies in the UK last year, so it’s no surprise that it has made itself known at the BAFTAs and is feeling the love on its home turf. The movie has been nominated for a massive five awards at this year’s awards, including Best British Film, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Casting.

SNUB: Guillermo del Toro

Frankenstein has been nominated for a slew of awards at the BAFTAs, including Jacob Elordi for Best Supporting Actor. But similarly to the Oscars, Guillermo del Toro has once again missed out on the Best Director nom.

SURPRISE: Chase Infiniti

Missing out on a SAG nomination and an Oscars nomination, it felt like the chances of Chase Infiniti getting a nod at the BAFTA was slim. So it was a very welcome surprise when the One Battle After Another star received a nomination for BAFTA Rising Star Award and Best Actress in a Leading Role.

SNUB: Amy Madigan

The actress was nominated and won a Critics Choice Awards for her eerie performance of Gladys in Weapons, as well as being nominated for Golden Globe and an Oscar. But she unfortunately didn’t make the cut this year at the BAFTAs.

SURPRISE: Paul Mescal

After being left out of the Best Supporting Actor category during last week’s Oscar noms, Paul Mescal’s portrayal of William Shakespeare got him a nomination in BAFTA’s books. This makes it his third nomination in just four years, with his work in Aftersun snagging him a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role, with another nom for Best Supporting Actor for All of Us Strangers.
