Some anime play things safe by keeping their cast static throughout the entire show, stubbornly refusing to kill characters off after critical confrontations.
Hell’s Paradise is a little bit different, however, and will liberally wipe people off one after another. It’s like Battle Royale, except with more ninjas. Heck yeah.
So in an anime where nobody is completely safe, you might be wondering who survives in Hell’s Paradise when it’s all said and done? Don’t worry, you eager beaver, because we’ve got all the answers you’re looking for.
Also, a spoiler warning is in effect. But you surely knew that by now.
Which Criminals Survive in Hell’s Paradise?
Gabimaru

Yes, as unlikely as it might seem considering the odds stacked against him, the main character Gabimaru manages to make it off of Shinsekyo alive.
This is despite sustaining bodily harm that would have surely killed lesser men, at one point even sustaining a complete decapitation. He pulls through, and finally reunites with his wife Yui in the end. Daww.
Gantetsusai Tamiya

You might have thought he was coded to die a glorious death, but nope, the mighty Gantetsusai somehow survives the whole ordeal.
He even gets special credit, as he is the one who receives the shogun’s official pardon as the apparent “winner” of the competition. Finally free of his crimes, he opens a dojo of his own. He remains very shouty.
Chobei Aza

As someone who has lived through countless nightmares dating back to his childhood, Chobei had the stuff to make it through Hell’s Paradise.
With that being said, he has taken on a strange new form, reborn to a toddler-like state except for when he unleashes his Tao to return to sinister plant dominance. In any event, he makes it work, garnering a legendary status.
Nurugai

Potentially the least surprising survivor from a narrative sense (she’s only a kid, leave her alone), Nurugai lives to tell the tale of the horrors of Shinsekyo.
She goes on to travel around Japan in search of something important to her, inadvertently getting into trouble with each stop along the way.
Yuzuriha

If you’re partway through the manga, you might be shocked to learn that Yuzuriha actually made it out alive in the end.
She experiences a dramatic send-off after the confrontation with Ran, only to resurface later on, recovered from what looked like a mortal wound. As contradictory as it may seem, it is perhaps in line with her survivor’s mentality to see the light of day after all.
Which Asaemon Survive in Hell’s Paradise?
Sagiri Yamada Asaemon

Surprisingly, the list of survivors amongst the elite Yamada clan is shorter than the number of convicts they were assigned to monitor.
The deuteragonist of Hell’s Paradise, Sagiri, not only survives, but she even gets to meet Gabimaru’s wife in the epilogue (with Yuzuriha tagging along for good measure). That’s pretty special, so well done to her.
Shion Yamada Asaemon

Blindness be damned, Shion proved that he was an unstoppable badass by making it off that forsaken island.
During the course of their journey to Shinsekyo, Shion takes the youthful Nurugai under his wing, so it is fitting that he guides her on her subsequent quest for home in the aftermath. Serious daddy vibes.
Toma Aza

Although he perhaps more belongs in the criminals section, Toma was a one-time member of the Asaemon ranks, so here he shall be listed. The important thing is that he manages to keep his head on his shoulders, travelling with his brother Chobei to Hong Kong.
There, they stir up all kinds of trouble in a tumultuous time for the island nation. Wherever Toma ended up, as long as he had his best bud and bro by his side he was bound to be happy.
Jikka Yamada Asaemon

The ultimate slacker pulls off an improbable win! Jikka’s uncanny sense of awareness has kept him alive through thick and thin, and by the end of Hell’s Paradise he winds up as the next head of the Yamada clan.
You’d think he’d have turned over a new leaf with this newfound responsibility, but nope, he’s just as slovenly as ever. You could almost admire him, were it not for how infuriating he is.
What Other Characters Survive in Hell’s Paradise?

As we’ve established, Gabimaru’s wife Yui is alive and well in the epilogue of Hell’s Paradise — thereby putting to bed one of its biggest mysteries.
That’s not even the biggest reveal, however, as in the manga’s final panels we are taken to a modern timeline, where a teacher is wrapping up an online seminar. We discover that this is the Tensen Gui Fa, and they are living a peaceful life alongside a resurrected Mei.
When they discuss that fellow Tensen Tao Fa and Ju Fa have recently sprouted, it is made apparent that potentially all of the Tensen live on to this day.
As a wise man once said, life, uh, finds a way.
