One of the first things you’ll likely do in Hytale is, you guessed it, build! So as soon as you get a Builder’s Workbench you’ll want to get your hands dirty, and you’ll need some wood.
Here is how to get Softwood in Hytale. So you can have a lighter, more colorful building option over the darker Hardwood which one gets from farming the ever-present Oak trees.

How To Get Softwood in Hytale
There are three types of trees and logs that are considered Softwood in Hytale’s early access:
- Aspen
- Banyan
- Beech
For the early game, though, we’ll leave Banyan out as it only spawns in much more dangerous areas in the world. So where can we find Aspen and Beech trees?
Both of these spawn in the starter biome, but in our experience, only Beech trees will appear close to your first spawn in a given world. We spawn a few different worlds in a row to test it, and while we were always surrounded by Beech trees, Aspens were always a bit further out.

With that being said, Beech trees are frustratingly similar to Oak trees at a distance. Oaks do have a red tone, but at a distance they look so similar that they’re hard to tell apart unless you have both Beech and Oaks next to each other.

That’s where Aspen trees come in. If you want to stock up on a ton of Softwood and don’t want to waste time occasionally hitting Oak trees, simply open your map and look for the yellow tree tops. Autumn-yellow leaves and greyish tree trunks, those are Aspens.
What Is Softwood Used For In Hytale?

Softwood is one of the kind of woods that you can place into the Builder’s Workbench to build the foundations of your house. While Hardwood will get you a darker, more classical looking tone to your creations, Softwood gives you a softer, lighter tone with roofs that look like they’re covered in hay.
It all comes down to personal preference, of course, so if you end up preferring the Hardwood look, just farm the endless Oak trees that will no doubt be surrounding your initial spawn point.
