Introspective, brash, and bold Charli XCX’s sixth album, Brat, transcended the confines of a musical release and morphed into a cultural movement, a frame of mind, and a mode of being. Not one to lose momentum, she followed up the hit record with another smash success, the remix album Brat and It’s Completely Different but Also Still Brat, with notable features from Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Lorde, and The 1975. The 365 party girl subsequently embarked on the Sweat tour, a joint endeavor with close friend and frequent collaborator Troye Sivan, and later her solo Brat Tour. A true shaker and mover, Charli XCX has solidified her place in the zeitgeist of the 2020s. It’s the kind of critical and commercial success that spawns one question: What’s next?
By focusing her attention on composing film scores and crafting soundtracks, Charli XCX has not so much as pivoted but rather has taken the next step in her evolution as a musician. It’s an endeavor that started with teaming up with Leo Birenberg for the Bottoms (2023) score and soundtrack. XCX’s latest cinematic venture is a companion album for Emerald Fennell’s upcoming (A Promising Young Woman, Saltburn) loose adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, a film that stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, respectively. The soundtrack will officially serve as Charli XCX’s follow-up to Brat.
