SPOILER WARNING: This guide covers content involving MAJOR spoilers for the Stranger Things Season 5 finale. Proceed with caution.
Does Eleven Die in the Stranger Things Finale?

In Stranger Things, Eleven does appear to perish in the latter half of the episode, causing the other characters to believe she is dead. However, her fate may be more open/ambiguous than it seems to be in the initial moment, as the final moments of the episodes gave a look into the future of the main characters.
During a scene featuring the group completing their DND campaign with Mike as the DM, it is revealed that he thinks Eleven is still out there somewhere. Let’s take a look at how everything unfolded below:
During a confrontation with Vecna, it is revealed to Hopper that Eleven intends to follow Kali’s plan and sacrifice herself to ensure the cycle between the military and the gifted children stops. Furthermore, Kali is then killed by Dr. Kay’s military, specifically Lt. Akers. To viewers, it seems like this would only prove her point to Eleven, that they will never escape, that they will always be hunted, or die trying to escape.

Despite the loss, Eleven is able to play her part in successfully defeating Vecna and the Mind Flayer. She is confirmed to be traveling back in the van with them. However, when they are intercepted by the military, she’s suddenly gone. They turn to see Eleven standing back on the other side of the gate, the Upside Down starting to collapse due to the bomb.
As a final goodbye, she uses her powers to make psychic contact with Mike. Mike begs Eleven to reconsider and tell her he doesn’t understand. Eleven then tells him that one day, he will, and the two share a tearful goodbye.

The camera then pans to the rest of the Hawkins gang screaming and fighting to free themselves and help as Eleven is consumed by the destruction. The gate then closes, leaving an empty shell behind. To everyone who witnessed the scene, Eleven seems to be dead and gone within the collapse of the Upside Down.
Is Eleven Actually Still Alive at the End of Stranger Things?

Eleven may not truly be as dead and gone as it first seemed. In fact, her fate is left rather open for the viewer to decide. This is due to a theory by Mike. During the conclusion of a DND campaign with the group, his true theory on what happened to Eleven comes up. Mike still believes that she is out there somewhere, living life peacefully.
His theory comes from the fact that the sirens that the Military uses to weaken the gifted children were present at the military intervention. This means that Eleven could not have used her powers in that moment. But then how could she possibly escape the truck, or make psychic contact for her goodbye? Well, Mike theorizes that she was never there to begin with.

He believes that, as a dying act, Kali decided to gift her sister the life of freedom they thought they would never be able to have. Mike believes Kali was able to use the powers of invisibility to disguise Eleven, letting her slip out unnoticed. After all, she was already seen to do this back in Season 3, where her character was first introduced.
She then used the remainder of her power to create an apparition of Eleven, which was what they saw standing in the gate to the Upside Down the moment it collapsed. During Mic’s flashback, the Eleven standing in the gate was shown to have her finger twitch, which has also been shown as a tell for when someone or something is one of Kali’s apparitions.

Mike then believes Eleven used the underground tunnels to escape and get some place far, far away from Hawkins (perhaps even to another world), where nobody would ever harm her again.
Whether this theory actually holds any weight or not, though, is up for discussion. On one hand, Mike could be so overwhelmed with grief that he has taken to coming up with new, non-existent details of the even to help himself cope.
On the other hand, it could be simply coming to terms with it, acceptance, and moving on, that has enabled him to think in this more positive light. After all, Eleven did leave him with the words ‘one day, you will understand’. Perhaps, that was not simply in reference to a self-sacrifice. Instead, it could have been a hint towards a hidden truth. Really, it’s up to each individual viewer to decide!
