With the new Mounts of Mayhem update drop, Minecraft players are introduced to a lot of new content in the game. This includes mobs such as the Nautilus, a neutral aquatic mob that spawns underwater.

While the Nautilus can seem like a complete mystery of a mob in Minecraft, it isn’t as elusive as you think because you can find it, befriend it, and ride on it. If you’re curious about how to tame a Nautilus in Minecraft, then you’ve come to the right place with our guide below.

Where to Find Nautilus in Minecraft

The Nautilus mob can spawn in all ocean biomes in Minecraft, regardless of whether it’s a Cold Ocean or a Warm Ocean. But that doesn’t mean you’ll immediately find one near the surface swimming alongside fish.

Players can find the Nautilus around the ocean floor, especially if there are areas with a lot of Kelp and Seagrass. Some Nautiluses also spawn in groups of two or three, giving you increased chances of finding one.

You’ll immediately know if you’ve spotted a Nautilus if you see a bright-striped orange shell floating around. Nautiluses are mollusks, so they swim, or rather glide around, with their buoyancy.

How to Tame Nautilus in Minecraft

Now that you’ve found a Nautilus, you can start taming it. You’ll need a Bucket of Pufferfish or just an on-hand Pufferfish. Either way, the Nautilus will eat both. Pufferfish commonly spawn in Warm Ocean biomes.

To actually tame a Nautilus, feed it a Pufferfish by right-clicking on it. The taming works similarly with Cats and Wolves in Minecraft, wherein you might need to feed them a few times to get the in-game hearts animation when you’ve tamed a mob.

Breeding the Nautilus also has the same mechanics as other mobs, wherein feeding two Nautiluses will allow them to breed and spawn a Baby Nautilus.

How to Ride Nautilus in Minecraft

With your Nautilus tamed, you can also try riding it. To do so, you need to have a Saddle, which is now craftable with 3 Leather and 1 Iron Ingot.

You can place the Saddle on your tamed Nautilus by right-clicking on it. Just like with Horses and other mounts, you can also open up the Nautilus’ inventory interface, wherein you can add Armor alongside the Saddle.

When riding the Nautilus, you also get the “Breath of the Nautilus” effect, which slows down your oxygen bar’s depletion, giving you more time to swim underwater.

However, you’ll still need to resurface eventually. Another ability you get when riding the Nautilus is a Dash skill similar to Camels, which you can use when pressing the Jump button.

Tips for Taming the Nautilus

If you’re playing in Survival mode, it also helps to have a Potion of Water Breathing, so you can easily dive down in the ocean without worrying too much about your oxygen.

You can also use the door method, which involves placing a door on a block and swimming through it to restore your oxygen.
