The Sonic the Hedgehog film universe will be expanding in some way for the 2028 Christmas season, when a new spin-off movie is released. According to Variety, this “Sonic Universe Event Film” will be released in theaters one month following the release of a new untitled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film.
When is the New Sonic Movie Coming & Which Characters Will Be Involved?
As of this writing, this new Sonic movie is unnamed, and who it will focus on is unknown. The next mainline film to star the blue blur, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’, looks to heavily focus on Sonic’s interactions with Metal Sonic and Amy Rose, and is set to release on March 19, 2027. As the ‘Sonic 5’ film has been stated to be a spin-off, it’s doubtful that Sonic will star in this new project.
Of course, there is a lot of room for things to change between now and the film’s release, but the best bet for this newly announced movie is Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves, to get his own movie.
If that is the case, it could focus either on telling more about his history with Maria and the Robotnik family or tell a new story in the present timeline, potentially introducing characters like Rouge the Bat and E-123 Omega.To this point, the only spin-off action the Sonic film universe has gotten is the Knuckles series on Paramount+.
For Sonic fans all around the world, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was an incredibly exciting movie, bringing Shadow into the mix, with many praising Reeves’ casting as the darker hedgehog.
Whether or not he will appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is currently unknown, but given that the movie is likely going to focus on the Sonic CD characters, he probably won’t have a massive impact regardless. A new story focused on his current place in the world would be a good route to go, while being a perfect avenue to bring a fan-favorite in Rouge into the mix.
