The Roots update for PEAK has arrived, bringing a brand-new biome to explore, a series of new badges to collect in exchange for even more cosmetics, and of course, a whole section of new items and consumables to discover.

One of these new items is the Checkpoint Flag, which, despite looking rather ordinary, can come in very handy during certain situations. If you’re wondering how to get the Checkpoint Flag in PEAK, as well as what it does and how to use it, everything you’ll need to know has been covered in the guide below.

How to Get The Checkpoint Flag & What it Does in PEAK

In PEAK, the Checkpoint Flag can be obtained from the standard luggage suitcases that appear across each biome of your climb. In addition to this, it can also be found inside of Big Luggage and Explorer’s Luggage. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee you will run into the item, so to maximize your chances you will need to check for one by opening as much different luggage containers as possible.

The Checkpoint Flag is quite unique in terms of items. Once placed in the ground, it enables the player who placed it down to respawn at that location upon death.

How to Use the Checkpoint Flag in PEAK

  1. Use the left mouse button to place the flag in any suitable area.
  2. Continue on with you climb with the Checkpoint Flag as backup.
  3. If you happen to die, you will respawn at the flag instead of becoming a ghost.

The way it functions makes the Checkpoint Flag quite a situational item, but you can get good use from it in some scenarios. For example, if you are unable to keep up with the rest of your climbing party due to a lack of stamina and you don’t have items to remedy this, then simply resetting may be a better option.

By jumping down to your death and then giving up in the unconscious state, you can use the Checkpoint Flag to respawn with full stamina and continue your climb. As long as you were the one to place the flag, this should occur automatically, instead of turning you into a ghost.

Alternatively, it can also come in handy if you’re attempting a solo climb. In this situation, you can use the Checkpoint Flag as a safety net, enabling yourself a backup chance for tricky climbing routes.

Of course, you will need to consider the level of Fog before placing the flag. If you happen to climb up very far and then die and respawn at the Checkpoint Flag, there’s a chance that the fog may have caught up to this location, still resulting in death after all of that effort.

While the Checkpoint Flag is not tied to any unique in-game badges, it may come in handy for completing some of them. One such instance is the encounter with the Scoutmaster, as he will kill the player as punishment for wandering too far from their friends if they can not escape him in time.

You can simply place the Checkpoint Flag down by a friend, climb ahead far enough to trigger the encounter, and then let the Scoutmaster kill you. Not only will you be able to easily tick the badge off, but you’ll also respawn and be able to continue your climb as per normal without needing to wait for the next resurrection at the campfire/statue. This way, you can also farm other badges in the same run to get the most rewards possible out of a single climb.
