“With a large amount of BRs to play, let’s discuss if Redsec is able to top the chart, or if it’s just another game to get lost in the mix.”
The Map
“I applaud them for sticking to their realism guns, but the map is just super bland”

One of the core aspects of any good battle royale is the map itself. In order to keep a player base from coming back, you need to have a map that is interesting enough to continuously drop into game after game after game. In my honest opinion, Redsec’s map is pretty bland. I understand that the developers were going for a real world map, but even Warzone’s first iteration at least had some environmental variation to it. This map feels like you’re in the same place no matter where you are. The locations aren’t memorable, and everything just blends in with the environment. That’s not to say that the map isn’t graphically good to look at, it’s just that there’s no pop to it.
Weapons
“The guns feel great, and the upgrade system is a nice change.”

This is one aspect where Redsec succeeds. The guns feel great, and none of them feel too overpowered that you feel defeated in a gun fight. I also enjoy the way in which you upgrade your weapons. In order to do this, you need to pick up specific upgrade kits that are found in loot boxes. Once you get an upgrade kit for a type of weapon, you get to choose from 2 random options. Sometimes you’ll get an upgrade for a new scope, other times you get an upgrade for more stability. To me, this is so much better than running around and finding scopes that you don’t need, or attachments that you already have.
Missions
“A great way to pass the time while you’re waiting for a squad to run up on you.”

On top of upgrading weapons that you find during the game, you can also acquire your own personal weapons, just like you can in Warzone. In order to do this, there are missions that you must complete with your squad, such as planting a bomb in a specific location, or aligning satellites. The thing that I appreciated about these missions is that they are loud to complete. Everyone in a wide vicinity can hear, and see, if you are trying to complete one. So, even though they are pretty basic, they will not be easy. These missions can also unlock upgraded weaponry that will help you get the upper hand over enemy squads. Moreover, this adds something to do while you’re playing, rather than just running around and waiting to run up on a squad.
Core Gameplay
“A hyper intense battle royale where you are always on the move and you never feel safe.”

Obviously, the main thing keeping players coming back to any battle royale is the gameplay loop itself. This is another area where I think that Redsec excels. They were going for realistic, and nailed it. For me and my squad, we never felt safe. You are constantly on the move; the storm, which in this game’s case is a giant ring of fire, is constantly closing in. This gets rid of one of the most infuriating things in any battle royale, camping. I also like the Second Chance system where if you die before a certain time, you are given a second life. However, be mindful, you only get one and once your whole squad is dead you can’t use it again.
Redsec also implements the squad roles of Battlefield 6 (Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon). The great thing about this is that each player can choose the same role, so you don’t have to feel like you are playing a role you don’t want. However, it is probably best to not all pick the same role as the buffs can really help you put yourself a little above the competition. I thought that this was a good mechanic to add into the game to help them differentiate themselves from other battle royales.
There is also a little bit of a buzz online about tanks being over powered and not fair, I would have to disagree with this. In the few days that I’ve been playing, I haven’t seen too many tanks going around, and the ones that I have, I have seen them destroyed pretty easily. In my opinion, the tanks are a great addition to the game because they, again, help separate Redsec from other battle royales.
Finally, defeating enemies feels like a happy medium in this game. You don’t feel like you die instantly, nor do you feel like it is impossible to kill an enemy. That’s not to say that this game isn’t difficult. I actually find this to be one of the most intense battle royales that I’ve played, and I’ve played a lot. This makes victories feel all the more special as you are clawing tooth and nail to get that final kill.
Bugs
“While not gamebreaking, they are annoying enough to be noticeable.”

Now we get to the really bad with Redsec; the bugs. The biggest bug that my squad encountered was falling through houses. You’ll land on a roof, and your body will just morph through it. Or, there’ll be a garage door and rather than breaking it you can just run right through it like a ghost. However, the most annoying bug of all, not being able to pick up things from chests, especially in detrimental scenarios. For example, we had one game where my teammate was trying to pick up smokes to blend in and he just wasn’t able to, no matter what he tried. There is also a little bit of an issue with hit scanning but I haven’t noticed it too much. On top of that, make sure you use at least fiddle with your controller when you’re dead because if you don’t, you may get kicked back to the lobby and lose all your XP. For this, I am not really willing to give the devs a pass, especially since they released it almost 2 weeks after the game came out, it almost felt like they didn’t play test the game before launching it.
Battlefield Redsec: Overall, is Redsec a battle royale that is going to topple the likes of Fortnite and Apex Legends? Absolutely not. But, if you like Warzone and a more intense and realistic battle royale, you’ll enjoy Battlefield Redsec, even more when they eventually fix those bugs. – Anthony Fichtner
