In The Outer Worlds 2, you’ll encounter areas filled with Zyranium, a poisonous gas that slowly drains your health. To survive, you’ll need the Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus, or simply, the Energy Shield. This gadget is essential for completing certain quests in the game. In this guide, I’ll explain how to get the Zyranium Energy Shield to help you progress further.
To get the Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus, you must complete the “Above and Beyond Repair” quest. Here’s a step-by-step guide to complete the quest and obtain the shield.
Step 1: Automech Repair Center
To start the quest, head over to Fairfield and talk with Officer Babylon Kaur, who will give you the mission. Next, you need to get into the Automech Repair Center.
Head northwest of Fairfield to find a Protectorate facility. You’ll meet Inez there, who you can recruit as a companion. Go to the second floor of this base and find a computer. There will be some Raptidons guarding it, so take them out first.
Use the computer to print out an authorization card. This card makes everyone think you’re from the Protectorate, which gets you into the Automech Repair Center without any hassle. Once you’re in, talk to Marshal Donelson to kick things off.
Step 2: Zyranium Leak Research
Marshal Donelson will be chatting with Chief Mechanist Woodrow Contos about a Zyranium leak problem. Accept the quest from him, and you’ll be sent to Chief Deviser Delphinia Bryant.
She will task you to collect some dense Zyranium from a nearby leak. Just get close to the torn section of the station and grab it. Easy enough.
Step 3: Getting the Catalytic Amplifier
After returning the Zyranium back to Delphinia, she’ll send you to Woodrow Contos to get a Catalytic Amplifier. He has the Amplifier from a stripped mech, but he won’t just hand it over. You’ll need either level 3 Speech or level 2 Leadership to convince him.
If your skills are too low, he’ll mention another mech west along the coast. Head there, fight off the Crabble swarm, and strip the mech yourself. Return to Delphinia with the part, and she’ll give you the Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus.
What the Energy Shield Does
The Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus protects you from both Zyranium and bullets. It’s not especially strong; it can only take a few hits before breaking, but it recharges pretty fast. That makes it really useful for ducking in and out of cover during tough fights. However, this shield will be especially valuable for protecting you from Zyranium gas, allowing you to complete future quests.
