How to Get the Kalos Starters in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, you may be wondering how to obtain the Kalos starter Pokemon trio of Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie. Well, these guys can’t simply be found inhabiting a Wild Zone or roaming Lumiose City.
Instead, each one of these starter Pokemon is tied to a unique Side Mission that you will need to complete. After completing the related Side Mission, you will be awarded the Pokemon to use for the rest of your adventure as you’d like.
Each one of the starters is tied to the following Side Missions.
- Chespin: Side Mission 007 – A Feisty Chespin
- Fennekin: Side Mission 008 – Get Well, Fennekin
- Froakie: Side Mission 009 – A Challenge From Froakie

How to Get Chespin in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
The steps for obtaining Fennekin through Side Mission 008 are as follows:
- Find the Taxi Driver named Axi at Academia Etoile in the Rouge District.
- Speak to her, and she will reveal that Chespin is preventing her work wit hits feisty behavior, looking for a fight.
- Prepare to battle against Chespin. Fire, Flying, Bug, Ice, or Poison Type Pokemon are the best choices for this match, as Chespin is weak to these moves/Pokemon.
- Defeat Chespin in battle, then heal up if needed before initiating the second battle.
- After defeating Chespin a second time, heal up yet again if you need to, then initiate the third and final battle.
- After you defeat Chespin for the third time, it will be impressed with your skill and want to stay by your side.
- You will now receive Chespin as a permanent Pokemon for the rest of your playthrough. It will be added to your party if there is an open spot, or to your box storage system if there is not.
- The Side Mission will now conclude and you will receive additional rewards from Axi to show her thanks.

How to get Fennekin in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
The steps for obtaining Fennekin through Side Mission 008 are as follows:
- Locate the NPC known as Branche at section of grass at Magenta Sector 2 in the Magenta District.
- Branche will ask you to find and speak to the Herbalist. He can be located at Cafe Classe on Vernal Avenue.
- Fast Travel to the nearby Pokemon Center and then run over to Cafe Classe to speak to him.
- He will reveal that Fennekin needs a Revitalizing Twig to feel better, and tell you they can be found in Wild Zone 5.
- Head over to Wild Zone 5 and find the piles of goopy poisonous sludge on the courtyard.
- Blast them away with a Water Type move, and keep progressing in this directon.
- Climb down the ladder into the lower section of Wild Zone 5, with the sewer tunnel.
- Blast the piles of poisnous sludge away in the sewer tunnel with a Water Type Move.
- Defeat or capture the Alpha Whirlipede that is waiting on the other side.
- Pick up the nearby four red item sparkles on the ground to check for Revitalizing Twigs. Unfortunately, they will all be damaged.
- Climb the ladder up onto the grassy section above, and check the final red item sparkle. This one will be the Revitalizing Twig.
- Return to Branche and Fennekin in the Magenta District and speak with them to give Fennekin the Revitalizing Twig.
- Fennekin will be cured, and will want to stay by your side following this. You will now obtain Fennekin as a permanent Pokemon to use for the rest of your playthrough.
- The Side Mission will now conclude, and you will receive your additional rewards from Branche.

How to Get Froakie in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
The steps for obtaining Froakie through Side Mission 009 are as follows:
- Locate and speak to the construction worker known as Surv. He can be found in the Jaune District, standing by the scaffolding on North Boulevard.
- He will show off the scaffolding course and offer you the opportunity to complete it and impress Froakie.
- Once you are ready, start the course. You will have 30 seconds to climb to the top.
- Once you reach the top, Surv will congratulate you and reveal the second scaffolding course.
- When you are ready to take on the second course, Surv and Froakie can be found in a new location, on the left street over from the original location, standing next to a new scaffolding setup.
- You will now have 40 seconds to complete this second course, which requires you to balance your way across long wooden planks to reach the top.
- After completing this second course, Surv and Froakie will now reveal the third and final course.
- Once you are ready to take it on, you will need to travel over to them.This one is all the way over in the Rouge District, at North Boulevard, near the Pokemon Center.
- This one will require you to not only balance your way across wooden planks, but also to dash-roll your way across gaps to land on lower platforms. You will have 50 seconds to complete this final course.
- Once the third scaffolding course has been completed, both Froakie and Surv will be very impressed – so much so that Froakie wants to permanently stay with you.
- You will now obtain Froakie as a permanent Pokemon to utilize throughout the rest of your playthrough.
- Following this, the A Challenge From Froakie Side Mission will now wrap up and you will gain your final rewards from Surv.
