Winter is (once again) coming to Arendelle. Kristen Bell says Frozen 3 is finally starting to thaw.

While walking the red carpet at the Nobody Wants This Season 2 premiere in Hollywood, Bell confirmed that Disney’s animated juggernaut is moving closer to production. “I have seen the script,” she told Variety. “That’s all I can say. I’m under lock and key.”

Bell, who voices the eternally optimistic Anna, clarified that the script she’s seen is still in flux — more a blueprint than a finished product. “It’s all mostly like concept stuff in the beginning,” she said. “Here’s where we think it should go. That’s the one great thing about Disney: it goes through a thousand filters, not to be diplomatic, but because everyone’s going to add something different. That’s why the movies play so well — nothing has been missed.”

The Ice Is Starting to Crack

Bell also revealed that the Frozen 3 cast will “soon” begin production, suggesting that recording sessions for returning stars Idina Menzel (Elsa), Josh Gad (Olaf), and Jonathan Groff (Kristoff) could kick off in the coming months.

Disney has been quietly developing the sequel for several years. Visual development art unveiled in August 2024 showed Elsa riding a spectral white horse and Anna on a brown stag — imagery that hinted at a more mythic tone. Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, who co-directed the first two Frozen films, are back at the helm, with Lee also penning the script.

What We Know About Frozen 3

The film is currently slated for a 2027 release, nearly eight years after Frozen II and fourteen after the original 2013 blockbuster that launched a billion-dollar empire of songs, sequels, and Elsa dresses. Plot details are under wraps, though rumors suggest a deeper dive into Arendelle’s mythology and the elemental spirits teased in the second film.

Josh Gad previously said the long wait was intentional, telling People that the creative team “didn’t want to rush it” and that Disney’s priority was to make the sequel “feel earned.”

As for new music, Bell hasn’t heard a single song yet — meaning fans hoping for another “Let It Go”-level earworm will have to wait. But given the track record of songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, it’s safe to expect at least one ballad engineered to dominate elementary-school talent shows for the next decade.

If it feels like Disney is taking its time, that’s because it can afford to. The Frozen franchise has generated over $2.7 billion globally, not including the Broadway adaptation and endless merchandising. With Frozen 3 and the recently teased Frozen 4 in development, Disney’s most bankable fairytale is far from over.

For now, Bell is keeping her mouth shut — and her NDAs intact. “I’m under lock and key,” she repeated, smiling. But after more than a decade of Arendelle adventures, her excitement suggests the ice queen and her sister aren’t ready to let it go just yet.
