Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning star of Annie Hall and The Godfather who became one of Hollywood’s most beloved and enduring performers, died of pneumonia, her family has confirmed. She was 79.
In a statement shared with People, Keaton’s family said, “The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11.”
The Manhattan and Something’s Gotta Give actress’s death was first reported by People earlier this week. At the time, details were limited, with the family only confirming that she had died in California.
A Career That Redefined the Hollywood Leading Lady

Keaton’s death marks the loss of one of American cinema’s most distinctive voices—an actress and filmmaker whose intelligence, humor, and offbeat charisma helped redefine what a Hollywood leading woman could be.
Over a five-decade career, she earned four Oscar nominations and a reputation for bringing warmth and complexity to every role, from Woody Allen’s neurotic romantic comedies to Nancy Meyers’ modern love stories.
Her influence extended beyond the screen: Keaton’s singular style—mixing menswear tailoring with romantic eccentricity—became a signature that inspired generations of actors and artists.

In their statement, Keaton’s family also encouraged fans to honor her memory in ways close to her heart. “She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community,” the statement continued. “Any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”
Keaton is survived by her two children.
Tributes From Co-Stars and Collaborators

Her friends and collaborators, including First Wives Club co-stars Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler, have shared tributes celebrating Keaton’s wit, originality, and trailblazing spirit.
A memorial service is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
