As August closes, Hollywood’s late-summer heat wave includes a streaming bidding war — and Netflix has walked away with the prize. The streamer has secured an untitled television drama from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, with True Detective season one star Matthew McConaughey and Yellowstone mainstay Cole Hauser set to headline.

Netflix Beats Out Rivals in High-Stakes Auction

According to sources, multiple major players — including Apple and Amazon — pursued the project, but Netflix came out on top. Final negotiations with McConaughey and Hauser are still underway. Skydance Sports is producing the series, which remains tightly under wraps in terms of plot. Insiders say McConaughey and Hauser are expected to play brothers, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the high-profile reunion.

Pizzolatto and McConaughey Reunite Again

This marks another creative reunion between Pizzolatto and McConaughey following their acclaimed work on HBO’s first season of True Detective, which earned both widespread critical acclaim and multiple awards. The pair previously attempted to reteam on FX’s Redeemer, though that project stalled before production.

The Netflix series also follows news that McConaughey and Pizzolatto are collaborating on a separate Skydance feature film based on Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins’ Mike Hammer novels — with McConaughey in talks to star and Pizzolatto writing the script.

McConaughey and Hauser Stay Busy

The Netflix series adds to a growing slate for both actors. McConaughey is also set to star opposite Woody Harrelson in Apple TV+’s Brothers, inspired by their real-life friendship, while Hauser will headline a Yellowstone spinoff series alongside Kelly Reilly, recently joined by Annette Bening.

Pizzolatto Expands Beyond True Detective

In addition to these projects, Pizzolatto is set to premiere his directorial debut, Easy’s Waltz, at the Toronto International Film Festival this September. The writer-producer remains one of the most in-demand creative voices in television and film, with his work translated into more than 30 languages and honored with multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, and Writers Guild nominations.
