Following a viral single-player demo on Itch.io, Shift at Midnight is officially leveling up. The lo-fi horror game about working the world’s most dangerous night shift is being expanded into a full-length, multiplayer co-op title on Steam.
Originally a tense solo experience set in a haunted rural gas station in the ’90s, Shift at Midnight pits players against monstrous customers hiding behind human faces. Now, thanks to the response from fans, developer (and creator of the demo) is building out a much larger version — this time with support for up to three friends via online co-op.
A Gas Station Full of Monsters — and Friends

The full release will feature procedurally generated rogue-like runs, additional weapons and store upgrades, and a whole lot more nightmare fuel. That includes new scripted NPC encounters, more traps and enemies, and a system that challenges players to interrogate suspicious customers using a limited number of questions. Fail to catch a creature in time, and players will have to board up doors, hide, and hope for the best.
While the solo demo was spooky enough, this next chapter is designed with multiplayer in mind — whether you’re laughing through the horror with friends or going in alone on a dare.
Wishlist Goals and Multiplayer Demo

Solo dev Bun Muen was aiming for 20,000 Steam wishlists to unlock a free multiplayer demo, but the game’s viral hit status blew up that spot and now Muen is playing catch up. Late August to early September is his estimate for the new demo’s release.
A single-player version is still available now on Itch.io, which play lasts around 40 minutes. Muen’s upcoming demo is teasing something even more exciting: a shared, chaotic, terrifying experience that feels like The Thing meets Papers, Please with just enough VHS grime.
In the meantime, you can wishlist Shift at Midnight on Steam now — and maybe start texting your bravest friends. You’re going to need them.
