Aaron Guzikowski, of Raised by Wolves fame, will write an original story set in Kojima’s eerie universe.
Hideo Kojima’s ever-expanding world of Death Stranding is getting another entry—this time in the form of an animated film. Kojima Productions has confirmed that an anime adaptation is officially in development, with screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski (Raised by Wolves) attached to pen the script.

Rather than rehashing the game’s already sprawling story (rain that ages you, invisible monsters, lots of hiking), the film will introduce an original narrative set within the same universe. Animation studio Line Mileage is handling production, though no release date or casting details have been announced.

A Fittingly Philosophical Choice

Guzikowski’s work on HBO’s Raised by Wolves—a series that explored isolation, survival, and the strange edges of belief—makes him a natural fit for Death Stranding’s more meditative sci-fi themes. Kojima has always blurred the line between games and cinema, and this anime continues that trend with a writer more interested in mood than exposition.

Kojima’s Cross-Media March Continues

The anime joins a growing list of Death Stranding adaptations. A live-action film is also in development with A24, and Kojima himself teased the animated project last month during an interview with Vogue Japan. It’s part of his broader mission to stretch storytelling across formats, pulling the tone and world of his games into other mediums without necessarily replicating the gameplay experience.

What’s Next

There’s still no word on whether familiar faces like Norman Reedus or Léa Seydoux will make animated appearances, or how the anime will tie into Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, set for release in June 2025. But Kojima’s track record suggests the film will likely prioritize atmosphere and themes of connection over straight answers.

The Takeaway: Don’t expect a traditional game-to-screen adaptation. This Death Stranding anime looks to be its own quiet, strange thing—just the way Kojima likes it.
