For fans of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the silence has been louder than a Sandevistan burnout. The 2022 Netflix anime seemed like a perfect neon-lit one-off — a self-contained, blood-soaked heartbreak story that had no intention of overstaying its welcome. And for a while, that was the case. But now, two years later, there’s reason to believe we’re heading back to Night City — or somewhere like it.
This week, the Edgerunners social media accounts sprang back to life with the kind of cryptic enthusiasm that only means one thing: they’re ready to drop something at Anime Expo this July. Whether it’s a full-blown Edgerunners Season 2, a movie, or a spiritual successor with more chrome than continuity, all signs point to some kind of return to the world that made cyber-implants seem emotionally devastating.
To be clear: nothing has been confirmed yet. CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger have kept things locked up tighter than Arasaka’s mainframe. But with Edgerunners officially listed among the titles getting a showcase at the event, the timing is hard to ignore.
Meanwhile, In the Game…

In a twist straight out of a Braindance sequence, the Cyberpunk 2077 game is also getting a surprise update. Patch 2.3 is officially dropping on June 26, and yes — it includes new content. After Phantom Liberty was largely understood to be the final story DLC, this caught even the choombas off guard.
The announcement came via CD Projekt’s REDstreams, where Senior Community Manager Alicja Kozera stated, “The last one wasn’t the last one.” Then came the kicker: Marcin Momot, the studio’s Global Community Director, posted an image of protagonist V with the caption, “I got one more in me.”
On top of that, a LinkedIn leak from a writer at Virtuos (the studio behind the 2.2 update) mentioned ongoing work on new Cyberpunk 2077 DLC. Combine that with a teaser video posted in March featuring six unidentified characters and the phrase, “Just a glitch in the system! Or is it?” — and it starts to look less like a glitch, more like a plan.
Could This All Be Connected?

The dates line up suspiciously well: a Cyberpunk 2077 update with new content on June 26, and a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners announcement at Anime Expo just a week later. It doesn’t take a netrunner to see the potential connection. Maybe we’re getting a new story set during the game’s upcoming content drop. Maybe some of those six mystery characters from the teaser are about to become full-fledged anime protagonists. Or maybe we’re getting a crossover we didn’t know we needed.
Even if it’s not a direct sequel, the next phase of Edgerunners could live alongside the game — spiritually or narratively — as part of a broader relaunch moment for the Cyberpunk universe.
Night City Rises Again
The demand is still there. Edgerunners earned a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes score and helped rehabilitate the game’s reputation after its infamous 2020 launch. Studio Trigger brought the speed, the pain, and the heartbreak — and fans haven’t stopped asking for more since.
Anime Expo is already set to be a big one. Alongside Edgerunners, there are planned panels for Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Kaiju No. 8, The Apothecary Diaries, The Rising of the Shield Hero, and more. But if you’re the kind of person who still has I Really Want to Stay At Your House on rotation, there’s only one thing worth watching for.
Stay Tuned, Chooms
Whatever Cyberpunk is about to drop — anime, DLC, movie, or mystery glitch — it’s coming fast. Keep your optics sharp, your speculation wilder than it should be, and your Netflix account active. Night City’s not done with us yet.
