Rockstar’s open-world opus Red Dead Redemption 2 might be riding back into town with more than just a fresh coat of paint. According to a new report from Game Reactor, a next-gen upgrade is finally in the works — and a Nintendo Switch 2 port may be launching alongside it as early as this year.
A Current-Gen Update Might Finally Be Coming

It’s been years since players started asking for a true PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version of Red Dead Redemption 2, a game widely considered one of the greatest of its era. While Rockstar has kept quiet, that silence may soon break.
Game Reactor reports that a next-gen patch is not only real, but potentially imminent. Details on the update are still vague, but its said to bring enhanced graphics and improved performance to the current gen —which we can take to mean 60fps, level of detail upgrades, and the other usual next-gen goodies.
That said, here’s hoping that Rockstar get a little funky with it and sprinkle in some new content too— maybe some of the game’s famous cut content will even appear

Red Dead Redemption 2 Gallops Toward the Switch 2
But the bigger surprise? Sources also claim that RDR2 is heading to Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2.
That rumor first surfaced earlier this year when leaks surrounded the console’s reveal. Though Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, and Final Fantasy VII Remake were all confirmed at the April Nintendo Direct, Red Dead Redemption 2 was notably absent. Now, it seems Rockstar and Nintendo may have simply been saving the announcement for later.
The Switch 2 version of RDR2 could launch alongside, or shortly after, the next-gen upgrade. That timing — if accurate — would not only signal Rockstar’s deeper investment in Nintendo’s ecosystem, but also solidify Switch 2’s standing as a third-party powerhouse.

Rockstar and Nintendo: An Unlikely Pair, A Big-Year Duo
Rockstar and Nintendo haven’t exactly been frequent collaborators. But with GTA VI delayed to the next fiscal year and rumors swirling about other legacy titles like GTA IV and the original Red Dead Redemption making the jump to new platforms, the timing is right for a deeper partnership.
If the RDR2 port and upgrade land as expected, it will mark one of the most significant multiplatform moves of the year — and give Switch 2 an even more compelling library out of the gate.
What This Means for the Future of Rockstar on Switch
Could this open the door for GTA V, or even a future Switch 2 version of GTA VI? Nothing’s confirmed, but Rockstar’s willingness to bring its biggest prestige title to Nintendo’s hardware — even in a technically scaled-down form — suggests the studio is taking the handheld hybrid more seriously than ever.
In other words: if this all pans out, Nintendo’s next console might not just be catching up — it might be riding right alongside the industry’s biggest players (or at least in the same posse).
