It’s happening — just not as soon as anyone wanted. Again.
Rockstar Games announced today that Grand Theft Auto VI, arguably the most feverishly anticipated game of the decade (century?), has been pushed back to May 26, 2026. That’s roughly one more year of YouTubers breaking down pixelated map leaks and Reddit spiraling into lore rabbit holes over palm tree placement. In a short, deeply apologetic message posted this morning, Rockstar thanked fans for their “support and patience” and promised the delay is in service of — you guessed it — quality.
This isn’t exactly a surprise, even if it feels like one. Ever since Rockstar dropped the record-breaking trailer for GTA VIback in December 2023 — a neon-soaked, TikTok-coded fever dream that confirmed the long-rumored return to Vice City — speculation around the release date has been a genre of entertainment unto itself. That trailer, which featured everything from Bonnie-and-Clyde vibes to TikTok Live-like chaos, blew past 100 million views in a single day and sparked a countdown that fans have been obsessively watching ever since.
But now that countdown has been extended. Again.
To be clear: Rockstar has never been a studio known for rushing anything. Grand Theft Auto V came out in 2013, and despite still pulling in absurd revenue via GTA Online, it’s been over a decade since the company released a new mainline entry. In that time, Rockstar’s reputation for obsessive detail and cinematic ambition has only grown — as has the pressure to deliver something that’s not just “good,” but genre-redefining.
Still, delays in the world of AAA game development are rarely met with Zen-like acceptance. Fans immediately took to social media to register the five stages of gamer grief. Over on X, reactions ranged from “take all the time you need” to “I will literally perish before this game comes out.” One fan simply posted a photo of a skeleton in a lawn chair with the caption: Still waiting for GTA VI.
There’s also a growing undercurrent of anxiety that the “extra time” might be code for studio crunch, which has plagued past Rockstar titles. While the company didn’t address that in today’s note, it’s a shadow that still looms over any delay-related messaging.
For now, the GTA VI release date sits squarely in late spring 2026 — a Memorial Day weekend launch window that screams “please clear your calendar.” Will we get more trailers before then? Almost definitely. Will that stop people from dissecting every leak and demanding answers like it’s a true-crime investigation? Absolutely not.
Until then, keep your pastel suits dry and your wanted level low. Vice City will still be there. Eventually.
