Overwatch 2 has gone full sparklecore in Season 16. The whole thing is dripping in pastel, wrapped in glitter, and running on magical girl energy. Blizzard is calling it “DokiWatch,” and if you’ve ever wanted to see D.Va go full anime idol or watch Kiriko wave a wand like she’s auditioning for Cardcaptor Sakura, this is your moment. Even Freja, the game’s latest bruiser, looks like she wandered out of a Sailor Moon fever dream.

But while the rainbow-pink makeover is stealing the spotlight, something a little more sinister (or at least nostalgic) is humming quietly in the background: loot boxes. Yes, the same randomized grab bags that once dominated Overwatch’s economy are still here—just not for sale. You can’t buy them, but you can earn them by grinding weekly challenges or pushing through the battle pass, and this season, Blizzard’s tossed in a few throwbacks to remind everyone they also make other games. Namely, World of Warcraft and Diablo.

So yes, in between sparkles and transformation sequences, Reinhardt can still become the Lich King. Moira can go full Lilith. It’s a strange cocktail: magical girl aesthetic on the surface, dark fantasy nostalgia just beneath. If Overwatch 2 is in its anime era, it hasn’t totally forgotten its goth roots.

So What’s Actually Inside These Things?

Each loot box delivers four random cosmetic items. At least one is guaranteed to be Rare or better. That sounds pretty boilerplate until you look closer. If you pull a duplicate item—say, a skin or emote you already own—it won’t just sit in your inventory collecting digital dust. Instead, it rerolls and if that fails, it goes toward a bonus loot box instead.

The loot boxes include rare cosmetics like:

• Weapon Skins – Unique designs like the Hard Light Mercy staff and Junkrat’s Los Muertos skin. Not bad for a free roll of the dice.

• Shop Skins – Yep, skins that once sat behind a paywall—like Celestial Juno—are now up for grabs. But don’t get your hopes up for anything too fresh. Current season or crossover skins are still locked down tight.

• Event Skins – Many Overwatch 1 classics are back in rotation, including skins from old seasonal events and weekly challenges. Ultra-rares like BlizzCon Reinhardt or Noir Widowmaker haven’t been confirmed, but a few lucky players have reported pulling BlizzCon-themed sprays. So… never say never.

• Everything Else – Think nameplates, icons, voice lines, weapon charms, emotes, victory poses. There’s even speculation that bundle-locked cosmetics like voice lines and poses are now fair game.

Now the Fine Print (a.k.a. What You Can’t Get)

There are, of course, caveats. You won’t find:

OWL or OWCS Team Skins – Team-branded cosmetics are absent, though maybe a stray promotional skin like Rock Climber Zarya could sneak through. No confirmation yet.
Battle Pass Skins – While the loot box fine print teases “past season” cosmetics, don’t expect actual battle pass content. So far, nothing from previous passes has shown up.
Mythic Skins & Weapons – These crown-jewel cosmetics are staying exclusive. No freebie Mythics here.
Currency – Forget about in-game credits or coins. Loot boxes are purely cosmetic. If you have everything already, congrats—you now get the digital equivalent of a participation trophy: nothing.

So yes, loot boxes are technically back. But in true Overwatch fashion, it’s not that simple.

Can You Buy Loot Boxes In Overwatch 2?

Short answer: nope. The loot box era is officially over. Once a controversial staple of Overwatch, loot boxes have been phased out completely—largely because several countries decided they looked a little too much like gambling. You can’t buy them, earn them, or stumble across one with your credit card anymore.

These days, your only shot at loot is grinding through events, clawing your way up the battle pass, or checking off weekly challenges (just three per week, so pace yourself). Blizzard did toss players a bone last season with a legendary loot box bundled into the premium battle pass, but even that small glimmer of nostalgia has vanished. It’s all battle pass and item shop now. Welcome to the future.
