Apple Original Films has unveiled a behind-the-scenes featurette for F1, the upcoming racing drama starring Brad Pitt. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), the film aims to deliver an unprecedented portrayal of the Formula 1® world.

In the featurette, producer and seven-time Formula 1® champion Lewis Hamilton asserts, “The F1 Movie is as authentic a racing movie as ever been.” The production team has gone to great lengths to capture realism, including filming during actual Grand Prix weekends and constructing a bespoke car for Pitt’s character, Sonny Hayes—a former driver making a comeback with the fictional APXGP team.

The film’s commitment to authenticity extends to its ensemble cast, featuring Damson Idris as Hayes’ teammate, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Kim Bodnia, and Javier Bardem as team owner Ruben. Notably, the production collaborated with the Mercedes-AMG F1 team and Carlin Motorsport to design a modified Formula 2 car for Pitt to drive during filming at real F1 circuits, including Silverstone and Monza.

Despite the high-octane promise, one can’t help but wonder if the film’s heavy reliance on real-world F1 elements might blur the line between documentary and drama. While the behind-the-scenes footage showcases impressive practical effects and on-location shoots, the true test will be whether F1 can deliver a compelling narrative that matches its technical ambitions.

F1 is slated for a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, with distribution by Warner Bros. Pictures. Given the film’s extensive use of IMAX cameras and real racing footage, it promises a visually immersive experience. However, audiences will ultimately decide if F1 crosses the finish line as a cinematic triumph or stalls on the starting grid.
