After the epic Secret Level episode starring a band of space marines, Demetrian Titus, and a tzeentch was revealed to have been layed out by Astartes writer/director Syama Pedersen, Warhammer 40k fans dreamed that he’d finally be back for Astartes II. And after four years, he is, and the teaser trailer is out. What a teaser. Barely a minute, and more than anyone dreamed of.

Analysis

Based on the final shot, it’s looks like it’ll focus on the Deathwatch– those veteran space marines that are humanity’s last resort against the xenos hordes.

But besides the Deathwatch, there are tons of chapters on parade in thie teaser. Scythes of The Emperor, Retributors, Blood Angels, Sons of Medusa, and Mortifactors. Will we see a squad of each chapter’s best and brightest recruited into a squad of Deathwatch badasses? Looks like it. We also peep orcs and tyranids, so we know the threat will be xenos, but neither of these seem fearsome enough for the Deathwatch, so what’s next?

The truth is, we know very little because Games Workshop just dropped a blog post that turns the teaser on its head.

Games Workshop’s Post: “Did you think we’d forgotten about this?”

Alongside the teaser dropped a post from the Warhammer community site, shining a little light on the enigmatic project.

It doesn’t reveal much, but what’s unexpected is that it says the teaser isn’t from the animation. None of those clips will feature in the show, they’re custom made to give a glimpse into the crew’s backstory. It’s a teaser on a teaser.

Release Date

Sadly, all this teasing is just that: teasing. Games Workshop has said “2026” for the release date and left it at that. “It’ll be worth it“, they’ve said, and no doubt it will (in a years time). At least, there are new 40k animations due in a few months like Return to Cadia of the Hammer and Bolter anthology series.

And of course, Warhammer TV has some old classics, including the excellent shorts series The Tithes.
