NetEase Games is riding high since beating industry giants Blizzard (Overwatch) and EA (Apex Legends) in the battle for best hero shooter. Marvel Rivals stole over 10 million players from the competition in its first three days, and now sits at the top of the list, cementing it among the best of the genre. So now that, NetEase has the team and reputation, it’s branching out into other genres like the Metroidvania/ 2D RPG to take on Nintendo with it’s latest game, Rusty Rabbit.

Rusty Rabbit: A New Adventure Awaits

On April 17, 2025, Rusty Rabbit, a 2.5D side-scrolling action-adventure game, will launch globally for PlayStation 5, PC (Steam), and Nintendo Switch. Set in a frozen, post-apocalyptic world abandoned by humanity, Rusty Rabbit introduces players to Stamp, an eccentric rabbit piloting his mech, “Junkster.” The narrative, penned by acclaimed writer Gen Urobuchi (Puella Magi Madoka Magica, PSYCHO-PASS), weaves a tale of exploration, family, and uncovering the hidden truths of a world reclaimed by nature.

Pre-orders for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch are now open, with a free demo arriving on February 20. Players can experience the opening chapter, and saved progress will transfer to the full game upon release.

Leveraging Success for Innovation

In China, NetEase is a massive gaming company, but it’s only become global with the release of Marvel Rivals. Now that they’re on the world stage, they have a lot more IPs and ideas to play with, not to mention famous artists to collaborate with.

Besides having the creator of Fate/Zero writing the story, Rusty Rabbit, has Busted Rose of Pop Team Epic fame is composing the score, and the voice of Yakuza’s Kazuma Kiryu for it’s protoganist. So besides the cute aesthetic and impressive visuals, you can expect more under the hood than just fluffy cottontails.

Rusty Rabbit also highlights a shift toward more affordable gaming experiences. Priced at $19.99, the game offers players a richly designed world, RPG-like mech customization, and fast-paced “smash and dash” combat, making it accessible to a broad audience.

Platform-Specific Highlights

Each platform brings unique perks for Rusty Rabbit:

  • PlayStation 5: Early access for pre-orders begins April 14.
  • Nintendo Switch: Physical editions will be available in Japan and Asia.
  • PC (Steam): Bundled with a soundtrack by Busted Rose, the composer known for Pop Team Epic and other anime scores.
