The album “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin” by the Wu-Tang Clan is a remarkable fusion of music and artistry, encapsulating the group’s distinctive style and ethos. Recorded clandestinely over several years, it features the entire Wu-Tang Clan along with notable guest appearances, including Cher and actress Carice van Houten. What sets this album apart is not just its musical content but also its presentation as a singular piece of art. Encased in an ornate hand-carved nickel box with a leather-bound manuscript, it exudes exclusivity and luxury.

The decision to create only one physical copy of the album, with no digital distribution, reflects the Wu-Tang Clan’s critique of the devaluation of music in the digital age. By treating the album as a commissioned commodity akin to Renaissance patronage, the producers sought to elevate its status to that of fine art. This ambition is further underscored by the legal stipulation that the album cannot be commercially exploited for 88 years, emphasizing its rarity and collectibility.

The journey of “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin” from creation to exhibition has been as unconventional as its conception. Originally purchased by Martin Shkreli for a staggering $2 million, the album faced controversy and legal entanglements following Shkreli’s conviction for securities fraud. Eventually acquired by non-fungible token collectors PleasrDAO, the album’s acquisition represents a symbolic victory against traditional music industry intermediaries.

The unveiling of a curated sample of the album at Tasmania’s Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) marks a significant moment for both art and music enthusiasts. As part of Mona’s “Namedropping” exhibition, the album transcends its status as a mere musical record, embodying a mystique that captivates audiences and sparks critical conversations about the value of art in contemporary society.

The unveiling will be held during a series of private listening events on:

SATURDAY 15–MONDAY 24 JUNE, 1PM + 4PM
