On May 17, NYC’s Pace Prints is opening “Liquid Light,” an exhibition featuring twelve new prints and handmade paper works by Shahzia Sikander. Running from May 17 to June 21, 2024, at the Main Gallery, this showcase promises a vibrant display of Sikander’s creative prowess, spotlighting pieces crafted at the Pace Prints and Pace Paper studios in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The exhibition kicks off with an opening reception on May 16, from 6 to 8 pm, followed by a moderated conversation with the artist on June 6. Sikander’s artistic repertoire, spanning drawing, painting, sculpture, and animation, converges in this showcase, reflecting her multifaceted approach to artistry.
Drawing from her rich engagement with non-western art history, Sikander breathes new life into pre-modern manuscripts and illuminated books, challenging conventional narratives with a keen eye on gender and power dynamics. “Liquid Light” draws inspiration from Venice, Italy, where Sikander’s work is concurrently featured in a survey exhibition titled “Collective Behavior,” evoking the fluidity of Venice’s history and the interplay between land and water.

Highlights include pieces like “Ode to Venice,” “Migrant Love,” and “ERA,” delving into themes of migration and women’s rights. Sikander’s sculptural sensibilities come to life in pieces like “Luminous Fissures” and “Gendered Currents,” where dimensional elements merge seamlessly with paper works, embodying a fusion of personal and global narratives.
Pace Prints is on 536 West 22nd Street, and is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm.
